The "Deepwater Champion" will begin working for ExxonMobil in the US Gulf of Mexico after the vessel finishes operations for the supermajor in the Black Sea off Turkey. The drillship is contracted to ExxonMobil under a five-year deal signed alrady 2010. The newbuild’s first stop was in the Black Sea off Turkey, where it began operations this month at a dayrate of $703,000. It is scheduled to remain in the Black Sea until December 2012 when it will be relocated to an ExxonMobil development in the US Gulf. Upon arrival in the Gulf, the vessel’s dayrate will drop to $640,000. The Deepwater Champion, a Gusto MSC/P 10,000 design, will remain in the Gulf until December 2015. It is capable of drilling to a depth of 12,190 metres and operating in a maximum water depth of 3660 metres.
