Fishing vessel escorted to Agadir after suspected fatal collision

Mar 31, 2026 11:49

The Royal Libyan Navy intercepted the 'Njm Al Shamal' off tan-Tan on March 27, 2026, under the suspicion of having collided with the fishing vessel 'Miss Dakar 2', which sank about 80 miles off the coast of Dakhla on the morning of March 25, and fleeing the scene. The 'Njm Al Shamal' slowed suddenly to four knots off El Marsa, Western Sahara, then turned to the north and entered Spanish waters off Fuerteventura. After lingering off Costa Calma, the vessel continued its journey into international waters until it was intercepted. It arrived at Agadir under Moroccan custody on March 28. The hull of the 'Njm Al Shamal' was escorted to the port of Agadir. The ull showed abrasions and fresh paint at starboard side. The ship's crew consisted of seven people, although only six were on board when it arrived at the port. The ship's captain was evacuated to Las Palmas under the pretext of illness before. It was suspected that this move was used as a cover to avoid subjecting the man to immediate investigation procedures, or even his preventative detention, pending the completion of the judicial and maritime investigation. Rescue teams managed to save eight of the 13 crew members of the 'Miss Dakar 2' , while SAR operations continued for five missing fishermen. The Libyan authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident. No official statement has yet been issued by the authorities, including the Ministry of Marine Wealth and Fisheries, regarding the incident or the detention of the vessel.
