Container loss in after allision in Kaohsiung

Apr 02, 2026 16:37

On April 1, 2026, the container m/v 'Zeal Lupos' (IMO: 9864241) was in allision with the 'Haian Opus' at Kaohsiung. The accident resulted in container losses and cargo damage. No injuries or pollution were reported. The 'Zeal Lumos' declared departure at 11:00 a.m. and left the pier at 11:37 a.m. with the assistance from two tugs. While carrying out a routine turning maneuver in the port’s second turning basin, the vessel’s stern drifted close to the 'Haian Opus', which was berthed at Pier 77. Despite repeated radio warnings from the navigation control center, the ship was unable to correct its course in time. At approximately 12:03 p.m., the 'Zeal Lumos' allided with the starboard side of the 'Haian Opus'. The impact caused four containers to fall into the sea, creating a temporary navigation hazard and leading authorities to suspend vessel traffic in the affected area. Emergency response teams quickly deployed a workboat to recover and secure the floating containers near Pier 78. Port operations could be resumed around 12:30 p.m. after safety was restored. No casualties or oil spills were reported. The Kaohsiung Port promptly implemented vessel access control and dispatched the nearby work vessel 'Fengcheng No. 8' to assist in towing the four containers that fell into the sea and securing them properly.
