Yacht banned from Akureyri on basis of sanctions against Russia
The 'La Datcha' was banned from docking in Akureyri on March 21, 2026, on the basis of sanctions against Russia that the Icelandic government was enforcing, due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The decision to deny port entry to the yacht, was based on the part of the sanctions that stipulates that a ship sailing under the Russian flag and having changed flag state after Feb 24, 2022. is prohibited from entering a port in a state in the EEA area. It has emerged that the ship sailed under the Russian flag from April 2021 to Sep 2022. On that basis, the Icelandic Coast Guard informed the captain of the yacht that it was denied entry to Akureyri. The Coast Guard and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have been in communication regarding the matter. The yacht was still located in Eyjafjörður and the guard ship 'Freyja' was also located there.
