Container ship sank after weeks ablaze
The 'Safeen Prestige', operated by the UAE-based Ad Ports Group, is believed to have sunk in the Strait of Hormuz following damage sustained during an Iranian attack. According to a maritime advisory issued by Navaresa IX on April 1, the wreck qas located off the Musandam Peninsula in Oman, at a water depth of approximately 120 meters. The vessel was struck on March 4 while transiting the region, causing a fire on board and the evacuation of the crew. In the following weeks, satellite images and videos showed the vessel still ablaze, fueling fears of further damage. The sinking of the 'Safeen Prestige' represented the first confirmed total loss of a commercial vessel since the start of hostilities in the region, marking a significant escalation in the risk to maritime traffic. Incidents in the Persian Gulf since the start of the conflict have already exceeded 20, involving ships hit, damaged, or indirectly involved in military operations
Abandoned continer ship on fire
A satellite image from March 18 showed large plumes of smoke rising from the 'Safeen Prestige' in the Strait of Hormuz. The vessel was located approximately 4.5 nautical miles northeast of Ra's Makhbūq in Oman. The 'Safeen Prestige' was initally struck by an AUV on March 4, causing a fire in the engine room. The entire crew abandoned ship. A navigational warning issued on March 18 by the Pakistani National Hydrographic Office, which is responsible for the part of the Persian Gulf where the 'Safeen Prestige' was located, alerted other vessels in the area that the ship was on fire. Container ship struck by missile
The ' Safeen Prestige', enroute from the Ghantoot port of Abu Dhabi to Jeddah, has been hit by a missile in the Strait of Hormuz on March 4, 2026, at around 1 p.m. Malta-time, about two nautical miles north of Oman, while transiting eastbound in the Straits of Hormuz. The projectile hit the ship at the stern, just above the water line, causing a fire in the engine room and leaving the vessel dead in the water. The 24 crew members abandoned the vessel as a precaution and were rescued by the Royal Oman Navy. All were confirmed safe, with no casualties reported. No environmental impact has been reported at this time. The incident may involve salvage, cargo recovery, and general average claims. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) received the report and issued a warning to vessels transiting the region. The Maritime Security Committee of Malta convened to monitor the situation and ensure maritime trade safety.
