The largest Greenpeace ship 'Esperanza' has arrived in Gíjon on Feb 12, 2022, where will be decontaminated, dismantled and recycled at the facilities of the DDR Vessels company. The vessel, built in Gdansk, Poland, in 1984, was used by the Russian government as a fire ship and converted into an environmentally friendly ship by the NGO in 2002. It has participated in different campaigns investigating and documenting the impact of the fleets on the African coasts and in defense of the oceans. Since January 2019, the European Union has required all vessels, whether under the Community or transnational flag, to be dismantled in an industrial plant specialized in the management of naval waste, with the aim of contributing to the conservation and regeneration of the marine environment.

The Civil Guard took control of the 'Esperanza' in the afternoon of Oct 26, 2021. The Greenpeace ship was preventing the tanker 'Merchant', loaded with liquefied gas, from docking in the port of Sagunto. The action of the agents, which has been authorized by a judge in Sagunto, has been carried out after they accessed the ship and asked the Greenpeace activists to depose their attitude, who only gave up control of the ship after the judicial decision.
