Offshore ship deregistered by flag state after drug bust

The Tanzanian government has swiftly deregistered the 'Eagle' and fined its operators $20,000 after it was intercepted in El Salvador carrying 6.6 tons of narcotics. The ship, initially registered in Zanzibar, had no Tanzanian crew members on board. Authorities acted immediately upon receiving reports of the drug bust. After receiving reports of the vessel’s seizure on Feb 17,, the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar moved swiftly to deregister the ship on Feb 18,. As a result, the vessel no longer held the Zanzibar registration. In addition to canceling its registration, the government has begun efforts to trace the vessel’s owners to establish the source of the incident. The company involved has also been fined 20,000 US Dollars us in accordance with regulations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Tanzania has launched an intensive investigation to trace the vessel's true ownership. Diplomatic channels through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have been activated to mitigate any diplomatic fallout and reassure the global community of East Africa's commitment to maritime security.

On Feb 16, 2026, El Salvador has intercepted the 'FMS Eagle' and seized a cache with 330 packages equivalent to 6.6 tons of cocaine. The operation took place 380 nautical miles offshore, and the drugs were valued at $165 million. It was the largest drug seizure in the history of El Salvador. A team of divers from the National Navy was deployed to detect the illicit cargo. During the boarding of the vessel, 10 occupants were identified: four Colombians, three Nicaraguans, two Panamanians, and one Ecuadorian.
