The Argentine Naval Prefecture (PNA) detected the 'Bao Feng' within Argentina's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) on the afternoon of Jan 10, 2026, engaging in activities consistent with illegal fishing. The detection was made possible by the Coast Guard System, a technological platform implemented by the Ministry of Security that integrates various information systems to monitor maritime traffic in real time. Using this tool, personnel from the Directorate of Maritime, River, and Lake Traffic electronically identified the vessel's entry into waters under Argentine jurisdiction. The vessel remained within the Exclusive Economic Zone for approximately an hour and a half, navigating at a speed of less than four knots. According to current fishing regulations, this movement pattern suggested that the vessel was engaged in trawling, an activity prohibited without authorization within the EEZ. The information gathered during the vessel's monitoring will be incorporated into the corresponding legal proceedings for alleged violations of current legislation. The Coast Guard indicated that this type of incursion constitutes a presumed violation of Law No. 24,922, the Federal Fisheries Law, which regulates the exploitation of fishing resources in Argentine waters and establishes penalties for foreign vessels operating without a permit. The Argentine Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is defined by Article 5 of Law No. 23,968 and extends up to 200 nautical miles from the baselines of the territorial sea. Within this area, the Argentine State exercises sovereign rights for the exploration, exploitation, conservation, and management of natural resources, both living and non-living.
