Tanker without classification sank in Orinocio River Channel

Nov 10, 2025 13:41

The 'Authenticity' capsized in the Orinoco River Channel on the morning of Nov 8, 2025, near mile 1.92 in the Matanzas sector of the navigation channel. The tanker had sailed from Cartagena to Puerto Ordaz. It was presumed that the lower part of the ship's hull may have been partially perforated due to deterioration of the steel. The ageing shgip had passed through several owners. Previously, it was also called 'Caribe Trader', belonging to the Trader business group, and later 'Sea LionÄ', belonging to the subsidiary Sea Energy Group, a company in Panama. The ship suffered an accident under this ownership, demonstrating that it was no longer seaworthy. The tanker was long ago decommissioned, when it was called 'Caribe Trade'r. When it was sold in Panama, it proceeded to Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, where it underwent an express dry-docking. It was later recommissioned under the name 'Sea Lion'. The ship was no longer classified and was a single-hull vessel, meaning it did not comply with the regulations of the international MARPOL convention, which stipulates that tankers must have double hulls. Theship, after being renamed 'Sea Lion', caused a major spill at the Petroamérica port terminal in June 2020. Consequently, the Panamanian maritime authority decided to sanction both the company and the vessel. At that time, the company declared bankruptcy. The oil spill had a major impact on Panama. In 2023, the tanker was sold to another subsidiary and renamed 'Prosperity I'. It also suffered an accident, at which point it was renamed to 'Authenticity'. It was unknown how it was able to navigate Venezuelan territorial waters and who is behind this project, given the vessel's condition.
