The 'Great Pacific', with five crew members on board, was drifting powerless in heavy seas off Alaska’s coast on Oct 27, 2025, after it lost power about 100 miles south of Yakutat in rough 30-foot seas. All five crew members of the 'Great Pacific' were taken to Yakutat by the Coast Guard on Oct 29 with no injuries. The U.S. Coast Guard cutter 'John Witherspoon' was tasked to assist and took the trawler in tow, but the situation took a turn when the cutter itself suffered a main engine failure near Kayak Island and was forced to release the towing wire, leaving the 'Great Pacific' unmanned and adrift for five days in the Gulf of Alaska. The Marine Exchange of Alaska in Juneau monitored the vessel’s movements and alerted other ships of the drifting hazard. AAn HC-130 Super Hercules crew from US Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak conducted an overflight of the fishing vesselin the Hinchinbrook shipping channel on Nov. 1. The ship got close to running aground new Cape St. Elias, before being intercepted by the US flagged tug 'Betty' (MMSI: 367159620), which took the ship in tow and pulled it safely to Port Etches between the Gulf of Alaska and Prince William Sound for further inspections. It turned out that the 'Great Pacific' had lost power due to a broken drive shaft, and the vessel underwent an underwater assessment to determine its seaworthiness.
