Storm wreaks havoc in Pagagonia
Winds exceeding 150 kilometers per hour on Nov 17, 2025, wreaked havoc in various cities in Patagonia. In the Caleta Paula Port in the city of Caleta Olivia, three artisanal fishing vessels, the 'Yakisa', 'Barracuda' and 'Alborada' sank. In Puerto Deseado, due to the extreme winds and heavy swells, and two moored vessels were damaged. In the port of Puerto Deseado, the 'Atlántico I', belonging to the Pesquera del Atlántico company of the Profand Group, was broken lose and alliding with the squid fishing vessel 'Soho Maru No. 68', owned by the Argenova S.A. The stern of the 'Atlántico I' had impact with the starboard side bow of the 'Soho Maru No. 68' repeatedly, tearing a hole of two meters above the waterline, affecting the forward storage area and the main deck, and resulting in significant structural damage. The 'Atlántico I' suffered damage to the starboard stern rail at the level of its quarter deck. Both vessels were moored due to the closed season, located between section 4B (second berth) and section 5A of the port in that town in Santa Cruz province. While awaiting a decrease in wind intensity, constant monitoring is being maintained to ensure the safety of the personnel on board, the mooring crew, and the staff of the companies involved. Once weather conditions permit, the vessels, currently under a fishing ban, will be repositioned to prevent further damage and ensure a safe and effective solution to the situation. The “Madre Teresa de Calcuta,” moored in one of the shipyards of Rawson, listed and took on water as a result of strong winds, causing it to partially sink. The Naval Prefecture was notified of the situation, and when the wind has subsided and the tide is low, they will attempt to pump out the water to right the artisanal boat.
