Bulk carrier sank after collision with container ship - two crew members missing
On Oct 25, 2025, at 8 p.nm. Singapore time, the ' Wan Hai A17', en route from Ningbo to Guangzhou with 23 crew members on board, was in collision with the Chinese bulk carrier 'Hai Li 5' (MMSI: 412356350), en route from Huangpu to Guangzhou, near the Mayoushi Lightship in the Lingding Channel, Pearl River Estuary. The 'Wan Hai A17' was entering the Nansha Port in Guangzhou, when the approaching bulk carrier lost power, resulting in a loss of control. it struck the bow of the container ship, suffered severe water ingress and sank due to significant damage. The container ship's crew immediately threw life vests, deployed emergency beacons, and lowered lifeboats into the water to assist in the SAR operation under the direction of local maritime authorities. 13 of the 15 Chinese crew members were rescued, according to the Guangzhou Maritime Safety Administration (MSA). The authorities had promptly launched an emergency response by deploying both sea and air resources and enforcing temporary traffic controls across the affected channel. Vessels transiting the area have been advised to maintain safe distances and comply with Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) and patrol instructions. The SAR operation continued. The accident site lies in one of the busiest and most complex waterways linking Guangzhou and Shenzhenβs western ports. Logistics companies had temporary navigation suspensions affecting the Nansha, Huangpu, and Humen terminals. The container ship, which is operating Wan Haiβs AsiaβU.S. East Coast βAA7β service, berthed in Nansha on Oct 26. None of the ship's crew members were injured in the collision. No leaks have been recorded from the ship. The Chinese authorities have detained the 13,400 TEU container ship that was about to enter port when the accident happened. The Singapore MPA has launched its own investigation into the collision. Vessels passing through the area were advised to maintain a safe distance of one nautical mile from the Mayoushi Lighthouse and to follow instructions from the Guangzhou Vessel Traffic Service and on-site patrol vessels.
