Fv-Radoche-Tercero

The 'Radoche Tercero', with 12 crew members, among them nine Spanish nationals and three Indonesians on board, suffered water ingress and was at risk of sinking, as the crew was unable to stem the flooding, approximately 55 nautical miles southwest of Castletown on the early morning of Oct 22, 2025. An SAR operation was launched by the UK rescue services. The Centro Nacional de Coordinación de Salvamento (CNCS) assisted in the emergency response. At approximately 6a a.m. the Irish Coast Guard requested both Castletownbere and Baltimore RNLI’s all-weather lifeboats to launch along with the Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 115 from Shannon and the Coast Guard’s fixed wing aircraft. The Castletownbere RNLI launched their lifeboat under Coxswain Willie Power with four crew members onboard while Baltimore RNLI launched their lifeboat under Coxswain Aidan Bushe with six crew onboard. Weather conditions at the time were described as fair with a ground swell of two metres. Before the Castletownbere RNLI arrived on scene just after 9 a.m., the crew received an update that the 12 crew members had abandoned their vessel and taken to their life raft.The fishermen were then rescued in apparent good condition by the French fishing vessel 'Puenteareas Uno' (IMO: 9194189), which headed to the port of Castletown to disembark the castaways at 5:00 p.m. The Baltimore RNLI’s lifeboat was stood down, while Cthe astletownbere RNLI was requested to recover the EPIRB of the trawler. The Castletownbere lifeboat crew arrived back to the station at 1 p.m. The 'Radoche Tercero' remained afloat for some time without salvage attempts having been started. The vessel operated from the port of A Coruña and also sold to the port of Vigo.

On Oct 22, at 4.30 p.m. the 'Radoche Tercero' capsized and sank in the waters of Gran Sol, southwest of Ireland. The 12 crew members had abandoned ship into the life rafts at around 6:00 a.m. due to the impossibility of coping with the flooding of the engine room. The trawler had been fishing 55 miles southwest of Dursey Head, in County Cork, when the emergency situation unfolded. The response was coordinated by the MRCC of the Irish Coast Guard in Valentia with support from Salvamento Maritimo, who notified the ships sailing in the area and mobilized a helicopter, an aircraft , and two lifeboats from Castletownbere and Baltimore. The 'Puenteareas Uno' arrived in Castletown with the rescued crew on board at around 5:00 p.m. They did not require medical attention. A few days earlier, the same ship had been seized by the Irish authorities after they found it had violated the rule prohibiting fish discards. The owner had paid a €130,000 bail to get the ship released and be able return to the fishing grounds.
