Van Oord executes various beach replenishments in Spain

Aug 21, 2016 12:25

Van Oord’s Spanish subsidiary Dravo S.A. has been awarded a number of long-term beach maintenance contracts. These projects will contribute to both coastal defences as well the development of tourism. This year’s beach replenishments in Barcelona and La Pineda near Tarragona have already been completed. Activities on the beach of Playa de Castillo on the Canary Island of Fuerteventura are in full swing. The works were completed using the small trailing suction hopper dredger that Van Oord acquired early this year. This new addition to the Van Oord fleet was recently named Costa Verde, after the coast of Asturia in northern Spain. With its small dimensions and shallow draft, the ship is very well-suited to the shallow water and smaller harbours that dominate the Mediterranean market.

COSTA VERDE 9184665

Jul 15, 2010 09:46

On July 14, 2010, the "Mary Christina" suffered machine failure in the overseas port of Rostock. The ship was just about to turn in the turning basin. Strong winds pushed the drifting vesselin the direction of a sandbar at the Northern Breitling where it subsequently ran aground at a water depth of 3,7 metres. The ship itself had a draught of 5 metres. The tug "Bugsier 16" refloated the ship and pulled it into the oil harbour, where it was moored at berth 34 for hull inspection by a diver. The "Mary Christina" had on board a cargo of 3000 tons barley bound for Rotterdam.
