USCG monitoring Chinese research vessels
The U.S. Coast Guard has responded to the two Chinese research vessels 'Jidi' and 'Zhong Shan Da Xue Ji Di', which were operating in waters off Alaska’s northern coast between Aug 31 and Sep 2,. The Coast Guard Arctic District deployed the USCGC 'Healy (WAGB-20)' to monitor and query the vessel. The 'Jidi' was sailing approximately 265 nautical miles northwest of Utqiagvik, and the 'Zhong Shan Da Xue Ji Di' was located about 230 nautical miles north of Utqiagvik. Both vessels were operating over the U.S. Extended Continental Shelf and were part of a group of five Chinese vessels recently active in Arctic waters. Prior to responding to the Chinese vessels, the Coast Guard Cutters 'Waesche (WMSL 751)' and 'Healy' had conducted a joint patrol in the Arctic Ocean, part of the service’s commitment to maintaining a presence in the region. An HC-130J Hercules fixed wing aircraft from Air Station Kodiak was also deployed on Aug 31 to provide aerial support. USCG continues to monitor Chinese research vessels
The US Coast Guard was continuing its response to five Chinese research vessels operating in the U.S. Arctic, namely the 'Xue Long 2', 'Shen Hai Yi Hao', 'Zhong Shan Da Xue Ji Di', 'Ji Di' and 'Tan Suo San Hao'. The Coast Guard Arctic District has been monitoring activity and deployed a C-130J Hercules fixed wing aircraft from Air Station Kodiak on Aug 13 to query the vessels. The U.S. Coast Guard, in conjunction with U.S. Northern Command and Alaskan Command, was constantly monitoring the activity n support of U.S. homeland defense and security efforts.
