Nuclear-powered icebreaker Yamal leaves Murmansk upon completion of repairs
On 1 February 2017, nuclear-powered icebreaker Yamal left the port of Murmansk for the Kara Sea. According to FSUE Atomflot, the icebreaker will operate in the water area of the Northern Sea Route till the end of July under the contracts with Yamal LNG and Gazprom Neft. Th ship will also provide icebreaker escort services to the vessels of Arctic Mining Company. The icebreaker was under repair in October 2016 – January 2017.
Transit navigation at NSR to be started with Taimyr and Yamal icebreakers
Nuclear icebreakers Taimyr and Yamal are entrusted with the beginning of the transit navigation at the Northern Sea Route, press center of FSUE Atomflot says. Nuclear icebreaker Vaigach is to close the navigation period in the Ob Bay. From early May, nuclear icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy will undergo scheduled maintenance to be prepared for the summer-autumn navigation period and cruise voyages which traditionally start in late June. Nuclear icebreaker Vaigach is currently continuing implementation of the contract with Norilsk Nickel on creation and maintenance of the ice canal at the Yenisei. This work is expected to last till mid May. “Navigation in the Ob Bay is expected to last longer – icebreaking support near port Sabetta will be probably required till late June. Nuclear icebreaker Taimyr continues escorting vessels towards the port under construction (about one vessel per week)”, the statement says.
Nuclear icebreaker Yamal left Murmansk for 55 day expedition
Nuclear icebreaker Yamal left Murmansk on April 8, 2014, at 23:30 Moscow time. As IAA PortNews was informed by the press center of FSUE Atomflot, the expedition of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute will explore the Arctic shelf. The vessel is presently moored at the berth of port Murmansk. The voyage will last for 55 days. The expedition has been arranged by Rosneft. The expedition programme includes the research activities in the area of the Kara Sea, Laptev Sea and New Siberian Islands. Atomflot says this expedition is a continuation of the previous one which also started in Murmansk a year ago. Its task was to research ice and hydrometeorological situation in the south-western part of the Kara Sea water area.
