Rona sank in Caspian Sea
The 'Rona', with 14 crew members on board, caught fire and sank n the Caspian Sea on Jan 14, 2026, enroute to Astrakhan. Turkmen rescue units received a distress signal from the vessel and promptly launched an SAR operation. The crew of Iranian and Indian nationality, was safely taken ashore to receive medical assistance and complete immigration and security procedures, indicated the Turkmen authorities involved in the operation. The Turkmen authorities announced that they were continuing their investigation and cooperated with Iran to clarify what happened and determine the fate of the sunken vessel. The ship had made multiple voyages between Iranian and Russian ports in the preceding months. This route coincides with the main maritime corridor used for transporting Iranian arms to Russia. The 'Rona' had called at the ports of Astrakhan, Makhachkala and Azov 20 times between Oct 2024 and Dec 2025. It sailed there from the Iranian ports of Amirabad and Anzali. Regarding the cause of the sinking, speculation has quickly turned to Ukraine's long-range strike drone forces. Technical damage off Canakkale Strait
The "Winner S" en route from Izmir to Novorossiysk, suffered a technical failure and dropped anchor at the southern entrance of the Canakkale strait on June 21, 2019, at noon. Repairs were being conducted by the crew. On June 24 the ship remained stationary in pos. 39° 52.24' N 026° 1.04' E.
Technical trouble in Istanbul Strait
The "Winner S.", enroute from Temryuk to Bandirma, suffered a technical failure during the transit of the Istanbul strait on Feb 27, 2019, at 01.30 a.m. Repairs were being carried out by the crew, and the ship dropped anchor off Bandirma on Feb 28 at 7.20 a.m. in pos. 40° 22.82' N 027° 59.55' E.
Fire in Tuzla
The "Winner S.", being under routine repairs at the shipyard in Tuzla since Oct 28, 2018, suffered a fire in its accommodation block on Oct 30, 2018, at 10 a.m. Initial firefighting operations were carried out by the crew together with the shipyard duty team. Subsequently, the local fire brigade attended the site. The fire was brought under control at noon and could be extinguished at 1 p.m. The cause of incident and the extent of damage were unknown at this stage. An incident investigation file has been placed by the local authority. Surveyors were appointed to investigate the cause of incident and extent of damages. No one injured due to the incident. The ship left the yard on Nov 6 at 10 a.m. and arrived in Azov on Nov 11 at 1.30 a.m.
