First Somalia registered ship in 30 years
Somalia officially registered its first ocean-going ship, the 'Guney', after more than 30 years on April 1, 2026, as part of the revitalisation of its maritime industry. The registry was being run by a Turkish company. The government hoped to encourage more ships to raise the Somali flag. The ship had formerly sailed as 'Volgo-Balt 217' as a part of the Russian fleet on the Black Sea. Most recently, the ship was sailing under the flag of Honduras. The vessel was renamed and raised the Somali flag after completing all legal and regulatory requirements necessary for a state to issue its flag. The ship has been berthed in Tuzla since March 19. The "Volgo-Balt 217" at 4.20 p.m. LT on Dec 18, 2010, ran aground at km mark 56 near buoy 153 in the Volgo–Caspian Channel. The vessel was enroute from Astrakhan to Enzeli Iran, with 3242 mt of steel and timber on board, the draft loss in Hold 4 area was 0.4 meter. The vessel refloated with the help of m/v "Mekhanik Vyshlov" at 6.30 p.m. on Dec 19 and on Dec 20 proceeded to Olya port for survey. odin.tc
