New vessels give Alianca Navegacao cabotage edge

Jul 01, 2015 16:09

The christening last week of the Vicente Pinzon marks the completion of Alianca Navegacao’s reais 700 million ($224.5 million) cabotage and coastal fleet upgrade aimed at securing its dominance in the Brazilian cabotage market. The vessel with a capacity of 4,828 twenty-foot equivalent units and its identical sister, Bartolomeu Dias, will allow the carrier to ship more cargo on services connecting to the Amazonas city of Manaus. Before the deployment of the two vessels on the Amazon river route, the largest vessels calling Manaus maxed out at 2,600 TEUs. “The introduction of these new vessels from Alianca Navegacao really is a game changer,” Ramesh Thadani, the manager for new business ventures for Grupo Simoes, a Manaus-based company with interests in logistics, beverages, gases, and vehicles. “At 37.3 meters (122 feet) wide, these vessels are very wide but it allows Alianca to access the Amazon river with that many more containers [than their rivals] on board that it gives them a great competitive advantage.” http://www.joc.com/maritime-news/container-lines/alian%C3%A7a/alianca-navegacao-gains-brazilian-cabotage-edge-new-vessels_20150630.html
