Single hand sailor rescued off the Needles
On Oct 18, 2025, the 'Valiant' located a wrecked sailing yacht two nautical miles south of the Needles in rough seas off the Isle of Wight, with the sole occupant clinging to the upturned hull. The Solent RNLI boat was called, along with Freshwater Independent Lifeboat and a Coastguard helicopter, after a mayday call shortly before 11:00 a.m. BST. The Freshwater lifeboat joined Solent Rescue 1 and Solent Coastguard’s SAR helicopter 175 in the rescue operation, with the Solent's crew manoeuvring alongside the boat and successfully recovering the casualty from the water. After wrapping him in a survival blanket and confirming no further medical treatment was needed, the decision was made to transfer him onto the HMC 'Valiant' for shelter during the return to Yarmouth.
