Cargo ship broke off its moorings

May 06, 2019 11:08

The "Syros Wind" broke off her moorings at Serifos in the morning of May 5, 2019, when strong wind hit the port. The ship was moored at the pier of the port and after a bollard broke, it started to drift away from the jetty awith the gangway hanging down from the starboard side stern into the sea. The crew was struggling for more than an hour with the raging waves. One man on the jetty, who also happened to be the deputy mayor of the island, helped to let the remaining mooring ropes go with the entire quay beeing flooded by the waves at the risk of his life. A crew member on the jetty was forced to board the ship with a load-carrying dagger of the ship. Eventually everything went smoothly, and the ship departed for a safer anchorage.
