On June 8, a cracked glass panel installed above the pool deck of the 'Symphony of the Seas' gave way, raining down shards on the lounge chairs of the deck below. Luckily, the seats were empty thanks to one of the ship's crew members who saw what was about to unfold. The ship had departed Cape Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey, en route to its first stop in Florida, docking in Port Canaveral, when the incident occurred. The guests praised one of the ship’s waiters, Nitin Kumar, for jumping into action, warning passengers just in time for them to get out of the way. Nitin saw it cracking and sprinted down to the pool deck and told the people in deck chairs to move. No reason for the accident has been confirmed, but it occurred while the ship was turning 180 [degrees] to dock in Port Canaveral, causing significant vibrations. On April 14, 2025, a young child fall between the 'Symphony of the Seas' and the concrete pier of Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay. The 'Symphony of the Seas' had departed Miami on April 13, and the visit to CocoCay was the first port of call on the 7-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary. The ship was docked from approximately 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. The child’s mother was nearby, and the child was rescued in a matter of a few minutes. The mother and child got back onboard the 'Symphony of the Seas', which departed CocoCay on schedule, and there appeared to be no delay to her itinerary. The ship spent April 15 at sea, and will call at St. Thomas and St. Maarten on April 16 and April 17, and return for debarkation on April 20. The 'Symphony of the Seas' barely passed a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sanitation inspection on Feb 9, 2025. The ship scored 86—just one point above the failing threshold—raising concerns about food safety, hygiene, and illness reporting on board. The inspection uncovered 44 violations. The issues ranged from improper food storage temperatures to serious hygiene lapses. Its most alarming findings included: - Raw eggs and hamburgers stored at unsafe temperatures; - Crew members with open wounds handling ice with their bare hands; - Gastrointestinal illnesses among children that went unreported. Royal Caribbean has yet to submit its corrective action report, a document outlining how the cruise line plans to address the CDC’s concerns.
