Sunnanvik

The 'Sunnanvik' ran aground on the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland on June 20, 2025, at 12:43 a.m. LT. The vessel, which was carrying 3500 tons of cement powder, got stuck between the east and west banks of the river in the narrow mouth, and allided with the boardwalk near the back patios of popular bars, "I Hate Cowboys", Welcome to the Farm and Forward. ck 25 feet away from the building and blocking the mouth of the river. thus causing temporarily disrupting river traffic. The incident prompted a coordinated response involving the Great Lakes Towing Company and the U.S. Coast Guard. By 6:00 a.m., the vessel was refloated with the combined efforts of the U.S. Coast Guard an dFolls from New York and Wisconsin. it sailed a few hundred yards to the concrete dock where it was headed to unlooad its cargo. Following the salvage operation, river traffic was promptly resumed, and Sunnanvik continued its journey to Loyalist Cove, Canada. The cause of the grounding was under investigation. The captain told the investigators that it was only his second time on the Cuyahoga River and that as he attempted to back the freighter into a section of what's called "Old River," he encountered stronger currents than he expected, running the ship aground and sending it into the boardwalk. The "Sunnanvik", after having been moored off Gdynia since July 6 finally entered the Stocznia Gdynia S.A. for repairs on July 8 at 4.30 p.m.

Divers have surveyed the hull of the "Sunnanvik" on the shoal off Lillbådan on July 1 to investigate the damage which was found to be not as great as first feared. During the evening, water was pumped out of the ship's ballast tanks with the aim to make it as light as possible and raise the bow. The Coastguard was on scene with the environmental protection ship "KBV 181" and monitoring the operation with the "KBV 304", but did not have to intervene. The tug "Krono" was assisting when the cement carrier got off the rocks at 8.02 p.m. and proceeded towards Holmsund where she dropped anchor for further surveys, before being unloaded and repaired at a yard.
