Four fishermen died in collision with cargo ship
On March 17, 2026, at 1:15 a.m. LT, the 'Suehiro Maru', enroute from Tomakomai to Hachinohe, was in collision with the f/v 'Kofuku Maru No. 65', 140 ts (IMO: 947430), which had 13 crew members on board, about 20 kilometers off the Misawa fishing port in the Aomori Prefecture. The Coast Guard's 2nd regional headquarters in Shiogama, Miyagi Prefecture, was alerted by the cargo ship's captain at around 1:20 a.m.,The fishing vessel capsized and rapidly sank. The 'Suehiro Maru' and another nearby fishing vessel commenced an immediate search, which was complicated by the darkness. They were able to rescue nine of the crewmembers, none of whom suffered serious injuries. Four other fishermen were initially listed as missing. One crew member was recovered entangled in a net at around 7 a.m. Nearby, the three others were located, who were all unconscious. All four were later pronounced deceased at a local hospital. The six crew members of the 'Suehiro Maru' were uninjured. The bow of the vessel, which berthed in Hachinohe after the collision, showed a large vertical scratch. The weather was clear at the time of the collision, with wind speeds of around 26 km/h and wave heights of about one metre. An investigation has been launched into the incident by the Hachinohe Coast Guard Office. The 'Suehiro Maru', owned by a shipping company in the city of Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture, was carrying a load of rocks, and had departed Tomakomai Port in the northernmost Japan prefecture of Hokkaido on the evening of Jan 16, bound for the port of Kimitsu inthe Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo.
