Re-opening of destroyed bridge further pushed back
The DB InfraGO has had to postpone the commissioning of the Wunderline between Groningen, Leer, and Bremen, which is important both regionally and as a vital link in pan-European rail traffic from Amsterdam to Hamburg and Scandinavia. until mid-2026. The start of cross-border train service on the Groningen-Leer route was most recently planned for the timetable change in December 2025. The re-opening of the Friesen Bridge in Weener, which had to be reconstructed after the allision fhe 'Emsmoon', actually sailing as 'Stolya', in December 2015, was faceing further obstacles. There were also technical challenges in connecting the existing signaling technology in Papenburg to the new electronic interlocking system in Ihrhove, so that the rail company Arriva could not yet begin the necessary, extensive training and test runs. Only after this will scheduled service on the Wunderline be possible, currently planned for summer 2026. The replacement bus service will continue unchanged until then. The pedestrian walkway across the bridge is open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., but not during high tide.

Emsmoon left Papenburg
The "Emsmoon“ left the port of Papenburg again after the wreckage of the Friesen Bridge at Weener was removed by the sheerlegt "Triton" and the fairway cleared for any traffic. The ship still bearing the scars of the allision shifted from the North port to the South port on Dec 12 and finally left the port on Dec 13 at 2.20 a.m. and headed for Södertalje, ETA Dec 15, 9 p.m. Photos: http://forum-schiff.de/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=6087#p121237 http://forum-schiff.de/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=6087#p121215
Sheerleg started removing bridge wreckage
After the allision of the "Emsmoon" with the Friesen bridge in Weener in the Leer municipality the Ems remained closed for ship traffic apart from smaller barges. On Dec 8 removal of wreckage of the bridge commenced after the Dutch sheerleg "Triton" has arrived at the accident site the previous evening. The work which will be supported by divers was expected to last several days. It was hoped to reopen the Ems for all ship traffic on Dec 11. Meanwhile the analysis of the voyage-data-recorders of the ship were in the focus of the investigations of the prosecutors i Aurich. Another question was who was at the helm of the "Emsmoon" when she slammed into the bridge. There was suspicion that the pilot himself had took over steering the ship at that time as the Russian master of the ship was unable to communicate in German. Neither the master nor the pilot have testified yet. There was no suspicion of alcohol consumption.
