The CROSS Reunion Island was alerted on Feb 4, 2019 at 09:35 a.m. by the "STI Guard" after the captain was injured and in critical condition following a fight on board. The assailant was quickly controlledand put in isolation. The ship, enroute from Ust-Luga to Singapore, was located in southwestern Reunion 300 nautical miles out of helicopter range. The Indian man was injured in the thorax by two stab wounds. The evacuation to a health center was therefore necessary. The ship was rerouted immediately towards Reunion Island and first aid was given by the crew on the advice of the CCMM's doctor to stabilize the man. The deployed BRAVO OSCAR helicopter of the SAG (CORG) reached the tanker on Feb 5 at 6 a.m. 20 miles west of the island. The medical team was dropped off on the tanker for conditioning and recovery of the injured in favourable weather conditions. The SAG helicopter landed at the CHU Félix Guyon (Bellepierre hospital) around 7.30 a.m. A relief captain was taken aboard the "STI Guard" by the SNSM boat from Saint-Gilles. As the dramatic event took place in international waters, the flag state was in charge of the investigation and the judicial consequences.
