Mar 19, 2026 11:06

The 'Star Gwyneth', which was holed in an Iranian attack off Dubain on March 11, has successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz on March 15. The attack had caused a two-metre hole in cargo hold no. 1. None of the crew was hurt. The ship was able to sail under its own power and arrived at the Oman port of Duqm on March 17. It was not immediately clear if the 'Star Gwyneth' had sought clearance by the Iranian authorities.

Bulk carrier damaged by projectile

Mar 12, 2026 12:33

On March 11, 2026, at 11.10 a.m., the bulk carrier 'Mayuree Naree' (IMO: 9323649), with 23 people on board, all Thai nationals, was struck by two projectiles 112 nautical miles north of Oman, shortly after passing through the Strait of Hormuz, enroute from the Khaliua (UAE) to Kandla, Gujarat. Two projectiles hit above the waterline, triggering explosions at the stern and in the engine room and igniting a blaze. Thick plumes of smoke were billowing from the accomodation block. The ship’s control system failed completely. A distress call was issued, and 20 crew members evacuated the ship onto liferafts, while three more remained on board as rescue operations continued. The 20 inside the liferafts were brought ashore safely at Khasab in Oman. Omani naval units were working to assist the remaining three crew believed to be on board, The Thai navy was coordinating through the Combined Maritime Forces headquarters in Bahrain, liaising with Thai embassies in Bahrain, the UAE and Oman, and working with the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) to support search‑and‑rescue efforts, and was also working with the Consular Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Marine Department and the Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Centre to assist all 23 crew members and arrange their safe return to Thailand. The container ship 'ONE Majesty' (IMO: 9424912), en route from Jebel Ali to Mundra, was damaged at the stern in a separate attack on the morning of March 11, while sailing about 25 nautical miles northwest of Ras Al Khaimah, a small coastal emirate in the UAE, about 97 kilometers from the Strait of Hormuz. The ship suffered one hole in a board covering the rear of the ship above the waterline, and another was in the floor of the steering room. No flooding was confirmed, and no crew members, including Japanese nationals, were injured. The vessel remained operational. It has reportedly moved southwest, away from the Strait of Hormuz, and was anchored in the Gulf, about 150 kilometers from where the incident happened. The ship, owned by Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) and operated by Ocean Network Express (ONE), a consortium partly owned by MOL, was anchored in the Persian Gulf at the time of the attack. On the night of March 110, the 'Star Gwyneth', bound from Paranagua to Dubai after delivering a load of grain in the Arabian Gulf, was also hit, about 50 nautical miles northwest of Dubai, being the third to be affected by strikes in the space of five hours. The attack caused damage to the hull, while all crew members were reported safe. The ship, which anchored in pos. 25Β° 54' N 055Β° 30' E, was holed above the waterline at the height of cargo hold I. The unknown projectile caused very little damage according to Star Bulk president Hamish Norton, and there were no water ingress, no pollution and no injuries. The ship would be able to proceed under its own power to a repair yard. US military forces had reported overnight that they had eliminated multiple Iranian naval vessels, including 1wo minelayers, near the Strait of Hormuz.
