Ship prepared for approaching typhoon and crew taken off
Ahead of the storm No. 13 (Kalmaegi), the 'Star Bueno', loaded with 174,790.0 tonnes of iron oreand carrying 163 tons DO oil and 2066 tons FO oil, with the Pacific Trading and Logistics Company KTd as freight forwarder, dropped both anchors on the afternoon of Nov 5 in a position that did not affect shipping activities in the Dung Quat port area. At the same time, all fuel tank valves were closed, all gauge pipes were sealed, and vent pipe bolts were fixed to prevent fuel leaks that could cause environmental pollution. All 22 crew members and rescue personnel left the vessel safely. The storm had wind force 14 and gusts of 17 and was moving rapidly west-northwest at approximately 25 km/h. It was forecast that on the evening of Nov 6, the center would reach the coastal area of ββQuang Ngai-Binh Dinh, bringing gusts exceeding wind force 15, waves of 6 to 8 meters high, a rise in sea level, and high tides likely to cause significant floodings. The Quang Ngai Maritime Port Authority was coordinating with the Central Region Oil Spill Response Center and local competent units to prepare for oil spill response, deploy buoys around ships to prevent the risk of oil spills spreading from ships and be on standby to quickly respond to any incidents that may occur. Currently, it was not possible to tow the ship to another location because towing would cause the ship to sink. At the same time, the waves in the area are large, so no resources could be mobilized to pump oil out of the ship. Therefore, there must be close coordination between central and local forces, fully prepare funds, equipment and human resources, and be ready to intervene if necessary and develop a plan to deal with oil spills. Vietnam's Maritime and Waterways Administration was urged to be ready to act quickly if the worst-case situation occured. Owners of aquaculture cages in the Dung Quat area were advised to urgently tow the cages away from the area where the 'Star Bueno' was anchored. The People's Committee of Quang Ngai Province, the owner of the Star Bueno ship and related units continue to closely monitor the weather and the ship to promptly handle any incidents that may occur. Damaged bulk carrier threatened by approaching typhoon
The Vietnam Maritime and Waterway Administration has ordered urgent rescue measures for the 'Star Bueno', which ran aground off the coast of central Quang Ngai province on Oct 26, to secure it as Typhoon Kalmaegi approaches. After having been refloated on Oct 29, the vessel was moved to a safe anchorage. Inspections revealed water in some cargo holds, which was pumped out, and the ship was stabilized while technical surveys continued. On Nov 1, the Vietnam Maritime and Waterway Administration held an online meeting with the Quang Ngai Maritime Port Authority, the Vietnam Maritime SAR Coordination Center (VMRCC), the shipowner, rescue units, and cargo owners. The meeting focused on coordinating urgent measures to ensure the safety of personnel, the vessel, cargo, and the marine environment, ahead of Typhoon Kalmaegi (Typhoon 13), which was expected to make landfall overnight on Nov 6, and the morning of Nov 7. Officials from the administration and VMRCC also visited Quang Ngai to supervise operations, while a forward command post was established on-site with representatives from government agencies, the shipowner, rescue teams, shipping agents, and cargo owners to oversee salvage activities.
Bulk carrier damaged in grounding off Quang Ngai Province
The 'Star Bueno', with a crew of 21 Filipinos and one Ukrainian national, captained by Bongcayao Robert Uy and carrying 174,790 tons of iron ore from Saldanha Bay to Dung Quat Port, and with about 163mΒ³ of DO oil and more than 2,000mΒ³ of F0 oil on board, ran aground off the coast of the Quang Ngai Province on Oct 25, 2025, amid severe weather conditions. .At about 6:00 p.m, while anchored in Dung Quat waters, waiting for instructions to enter the port, the officer on duty discovered that the ship's port side anchor had dragged due to bad weather. Due to strong winds and large waves, at 6:40 p.m. the ship ran aground in pos. 15Β°28'28" N 108Β°46'12" E. On Oct 29, the 'Star Bueno' refloated itself. Water ingress was detected in the cargo holds 1, 5 and 7, and the crew arranged mobile pumps to pump the water out. The incident promped an urgent response from the Vietnam Maritime and Waterway Administration (VMWA). Emergency teams have since stabilized the vessel and begun comprehensive surveys. On Nov 1, the VMWA led an emergency coordination meeting with the Vietnam MRCC, the Quang Ngai Port Authority, the ship owner, salvage contractors, and the cargo owners to ensure safety and environmental protection. A forward command post has been set up to oversee operations. As of Nov 3, the ship was moored in pos. 15Β° 29' N 108Β° 44' E. Winds remained at force 5, occasionally force 6, with gusts up to force 7 and 8, and wave heights of 2 to 3 meters, posing a risk of it sinking.
