Ferry returned to Devonport due to medical emergency
On Sep 2, 2024, the 'Spirit of Tasmania' has been forced to turn back to the port of Devonport just 15 minutes into its overnight journey to Geelong due to a medical emergency on board shortly before 8 p.m. The ship headed back to sea once the passenger had been taken off the vessel. Major drug bust on ferry
A man has been accused of trying to smuggle four kilograms of methylamphetamine and 2 kilograms of cocaine into Tasmania in the boot of a car aboard the 'Spirit of Tasmania 2'. It was one of the largest drug seizures in the state's history, with an estimated street value of more than $5 million. A 26-year-old Queensland man has been charged with drug trafficking and will appear in the Devonport Magistrates Court on Nov 6, 2023. He was caught on his arrival into Devonport in the evening of Nov 3, where his car was screened by drug detection dogs as part of a joint operation between Tasmania Police and the Australian Federal Police (AFP). Ferry stuck in Melbourne due to storm
Passengers were trapped on the "Spirit of Tasmania 2" on June 6, 2016, as the continuing atrocious weather saw all the sailings from Melbourne to Devonport in Tasmania cancelled. Storms and debris left in the Mersey River on the northwest coast of Tasmania forced officials at the Port of Devonport to close down the port to all commercial traffic which meant that the ferry had to stay put in Melbourne in the night with all the passengers on board having to remain on the ship until further notice. All passengers were accommodated on board the vessel.
