Spar-Scorpio

An Indian crew member has died after falling overboard from the "Spar Scorpio", en route from Samsun to Houston, on Feb 17, 2026 near Malta in the Mediterranean. Distress signals from the vessel were issued between 3.25 p.m. and 3.32 p.m. Norwegian time. An SAR aircraft from the Malta Rescue Center has conducted an extensive search, together with local vessels, without result. The accident occurred in connection with sea preparation on deck amid bad weather in the area. The ship was waiting for the weather to calm down so that it would be possible to take bunkers in Malta. The Norwegian Accident Investigation Board launched an investigation.

The 'Spar Scorpio', laden with 49,801 tonnes of coal, has been arrested on Feb 13, 2020, at the outer anchorage of Chittagong port, as per orders of the local High Court dated Feb 13, in a litigation case. The vessel had arrived at the port on Feb 2. As of May 7 the ship had offloaded its cargo at the outer anchorage of Chittagong port, and the local court has issued a release order for the vessel. It was likely to sail soon.
