21 sailors safe after Nigeria pirate attack
India's Shipping Ministry says 21 crew members of a merchant ship hijacked off the coast of Nigeria are safe after naval forces in that area rescued them. A ministry statement seen Friday said there were one Ukrainian and 20 Indian crew members on board the Norwegian-flagged MV Spar Rigel. It said pirates attacked the ship on Tuesday and the crew locked themselves into a saferoom on board until help arrived. It didn't say which country's navy came to their rescue. No other details were available.
Boarded by Nigerian bandits
Bulk carrier Spar Rigel was boarded by Nigerian pirates in the morning Jan 10 2012, presumably on Harcourt port road, crew hided in citadel and issued distress call. Nigerian security forces soon freed the vessel, though there are no details given, assumedly pirates left the vessel before security forces boarded Spar Rigel, after looting as much as they could manage.
