Tourist ferry destroyed by arson
On July 20, 2016, around 4 a.m. the "Sorrento Jet" was gutted by a fire at the dock San Lorenzo in Vieste, where the ferry was moored. Unidentified persons had set it on fire using flammable liquid and a raudo trigger, the Mistral did the rest and destroyed the ferry that transported tourists from Vieste to the Tremiti Islands. The fire developed in the boat's wheelhouse and then spread onto the whole ship as the bow was directed into the wind A team of firefighters of the Gargano Vico fire department supporetd by the patrol boat "CP 880" tried to extinguish the flames and to secure the area. On the spot were also the civil protection volunteers 'Pegaso' from Vieste. Already last year, unknown persons had tried to set the ship on fire, but without success. Just a few days ago, however, three rubber boats used by tour operator Gargano for sightseeing in the archipelago bays and coves of Diomede were damaged - they were torn and rendered useless.
