Ship refloated three days after grounding

Nov 12, 2025 11:51

The "Sørøysund" was refloated by the tugs 'Borg Parat' (IMO: 9067269) and 'Borg Fix' (IMO: 8012621) on Oct 11 at 6:30 p.m. and towed to Rødskjær just north of the incident site, where it was held in pos. 68° 35' EN 016° 32' E to be inspected. The towing attempt on Oct 10 had to be canceled, as further examinations of the ship were needed due to a leak in a pump room, which caused the ship to take on water. At 2:30 p.m. a towing wire has been connected to the wreck, and work commenced to pump and seal tanks and rooms in the ship. Towing started at approximately 4 p.m. The Norwegian Coastal Administration's surveillance aircraft has flown over the ship to get an overview. The fire department sent a drone over the area earlier the day, which located only a little visible shimmer of diesel. Approximately 25,000 liters of diesel may have spilled into the water. The ferry was berthed in Sør-Stangnes, Harstad, at around 10 p.m. Report with photos and video: https://www.vol.no/nyheter/i/rPvyWl/naa-er-baaten-loes

Salvage work postponed

Nov 11, 2025 19:17

Due to the prevailing conditions, the salvage work on the 'Sørøysund ' in Tjeldsund was halted on the evening of Nov 10. A new assessment was to be made on Nov 11. Strong currents and the transition from high tide to low tide were making the work demanding, which was being carried out continuously throughout the evening to control the leak in the pump room. The salvage was now planned at the next high tide on Nov 11 with the high tide at around 5 p.m. Approximately 25,000 liters of diesel may have leaked from the ship, but the final overview will only be available when the ship is in dock. The municipality and the fire department have deployed drones and booms to map and collect the spill, while wildlife and biodiversity were being closely monitored. Everything that could be pumped out has been sucked up and placed in IBC tanks, and the risk of further spills was considered low. The operation was being carried out with a focus on safety and the environment. The Norwegian Coastal Administration was supervising the operation and has been following the case closely since the grounding. Grounded ship started to leak diesel

Nov 10, 2025 09:44

Firefighters from Evenes and Tjeldsund were working of removing diesel fuel. which had spilled from the 'Sørøysund' off Fjelldal in the Tjeldsund municipality. The 'OV Skrova' (MMSI: 2571305809) was alongside the casualty on Nov 10. There were confirmed impacts on land, amd the fire fighters deployed absorbent booms and trying to minimize the pollution. The ship has suffered some damage to the hull in the grounding on Nov 8. Initially about 4,000 liters of diesel were estimated to have leaked from the tanks, which contained about 27000 liters, later the estimates were corrected to about 25000 liters. The remainder was now being pumped out into tanks that hold a thousand liters. On the niight of Nov 8, during the high tide, it was twice was attempted to refloat the ship. On the morning of Nov 9 the leaagek was discovered. -If the vessel would have been pulled further, there could be greater damage to the hull, and more oil could leak out, so the attempt was aborted. The oil spill repsonse was led by the Norwegian Coastal Administration in cooperation with the shipping company and other actors. No impacts on wildlife were expected due to the strong currents in the fjord. The crisis management of the municipüality was closely monitoring the situation and prepared in case there was a spill on the shore. After repairs to the hull were completed, the ship was due to be refloated on Nov 10 at around 4 p.m. with the high tide. The current would probably be up to two knots when the casualty is to be pulled off the ground.
