Tankers seized for violating sanctions

Aug 14, 2020 10:45

The US authorities have confiscated four vessels that were heading to Venezuela loaded with gasoline on the high seas for violating the sanctions imposed by Washington as of Aug 13, 2020. The 'Luna', 'Pandi', 'Bering' and 'Bella' have been seized in the previous days after a federal judge authorized it last week, and were currently heading towards Houston (Texas). The 'Bering' and the 'Bella' were sailing through Cape Verde waters when the US government filed the lawsuit for their seizure in July, while the last known signal of the 'Pandi' and the 'Luna' was in Oman. The lawsuit alleged that the shipment was organized by an Iranian businessman with ties to the Revolutionary Guard, considered by Washington to be a terrorist, through a network of front companies to evade detection by US authorities. The seizure of the ships represents another step of pressure to Tehran and Caracas, against whose governments it has imposed numerous economic sanctions.
