Tanker rescued missing rower
The 'Baker Spirit' has rescued the ocean rower Aaron Carotta after two weeks on the open sea. The search for him had already been stopped. The American had set out from Soth America on a solo trip around the world. At the end of May, he got into distress with his rowing boat 'Smiles' in the South Pacific, but his boat was overturned by a wave. He sent out a distress signal, after which the communication broke off. Carotta saved himself onto his lifeboat. Five merchant ships and four pleasure boats took part in the search for theman, but on June 12, the search was finally stopped. After that, however, another distress signal was received from the "Smiles". A US aircraft , which happened to be involved in another search operation in the area, spotted Carotta's boat. It was floating east of the Marquesas Islands in an area of the sea where few ships sail. The nearest was the "Baker Spirit", which was 390 kilometers away from the site. The ship diverted to the position, and 18 hours later, Carotta was found safe and sound. The tanker was now on its way to Honolulu with an ETA as of June 25.
