The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (SLSMC) announced on March 22, 2013 the opening of the Seaway's 55th navigation season with the transit of Canada Steamship Lines' newly built Baie St. Paul through the St. Lambert Lock. Marking the first of a series of new vessels being constructed specifically for use in the St. Lawrence Seaway, the Baie St. Paul ushers in a new era in domestic shipping. Firefighters were called to the Old Port on Feb 19, 2013, short before 8 a.m. after a fire broke out in the engine room of the "Baie St. Paul" which was berthed just under the Jacques Cartier Bridge. The smoke was contained in a room that houses an engine to operate the cables that tie the vessel up. Workers had been welding which started the fire which could soon be extinguished.

Montreal's Canada Steamship Lines, part of the CSL Group, is preparing to welcome the "Baie St. Paul" self-unloader, which will soon become the most modern and technologically advanced vessel sailing in the Great Lakes-Saint Lawrence region. The bulk-cargo self-unloader set out from the famed Chengxi shipyard in Juangyin in China Friday on its maiden voyage to Montreal, a 50-day trip. The Trillium Class Baie St. Paul is part of CSL's fleet renewal program costing several hundred million dollars. Three more Trillium class self-unloaders and two new bulk carriers will be introduced into its Great Lakes fleet by late 2013.
