Medevac failed due to fog - crew member died on board

A 61 year old crew member of the 'Silja Symphony' suffered a seizure, while the ferry was on its way from Helsinki to Stockholm in the evening of March 23, 2023. Other crew members immediately began to perform first aid at around 11 p.m., alerted the maritime rescue and requested a medevac by helicopter. At HangΓΆ, the ship turned closer to the coast to facilitate the rescue operation. However, due to dense fog, an evacuation by helicopter was not possible. The Finnish Coast Guard sent a rescue ship, and the ship's own medical personnel as well as passengers with a medical background participated in the efforts to save the man's life. Alas, he died on board the ship. Due to the incident, the 'Silja Symphony' arrived in Stockholm about an hour late in the morning of March 24.

Technical fault rectified

Repairs of the stabilizer of the 'Sija Symphony' at the ferry terminal in Stockholm which had lasted since Oct 27 were completed late on Oct 28 and was placed in the hull. The ship was due to sail to Helsinki in the afternoon of Oct 29 after the Swedish authorities have reviewed and approved the repair. Thousands of travelers have been affected by the problems.
