Container loss off Lanzarote
The storm Therese has swept 12 containers over board from the 'Aquarius' off Lanzarote, en route Huelva to Las Palmas on the early morning of March 20, 2026, about 24 nautical miles northwest of Tinajo. The ship was en route to the Canary Islands when heavy seas shifted the deck load, causing some of the boxes to go overboard and more to topple over. The Maritime Authority of Las Palmas has immediately activated a special monitoring plan to track the progress of the lost cargo. Due to the currents, the containers were drifting north and practically submerged. To ensure safe navigation in the area, the maritime authority has deployed reconnaissance aircraft, requested satellite imagery to monitor the containers' movement, and issued safety alerts to all vessels transiting the Canary Islands maritime corridor. The lost cargo consisted mainly of water, beer, and general merchandise, including furniture and other household goods. The 'Aquarius' sailed under its own power to the port of Las Palmas, where it has been docked at the OPSCA-MSC Terminal with the assistance of the tug 'VB Adriatico' (IMO: 9201011) on March 20 and remained stationary as of March 23. The storm and the shifting of the load damaged the freighter's structure so severely that it was taken out of service until further notice. Stowaways were working to resolve the situation. As the containers were full, this presents a challenge for port operations. The shipping company Alisios Shipping Lines had only commissioned the 'Aquarius' in September 2025 to increase its transport capacity.
