Cargo ship allided with yachts on River Medina
On Nov 4, 2025, at around 7 p.m. UTC, the 'Shetland Trader' lost its engine power, causing it to crash into moored yachts on the River Medina on the Isle of Wight, en route from Terneuzen to Cowes. After the engine failure, the Cowes pilot began immediate emergency procedures, including ordering the vessel’s anchor to be dropped to slow the vessel and control movement. The ship, however, continued forward for a short distance, plowing into the anchorage for the port’s private, recreational crafts. It started sounding its horn, scraped along a pontoon and dragged a sailing vessel with it, causing its moorings to part. The yacht became entangled with the cargo vessel. The mast of the sailboat was broken and bent over. Local boat owners assisted in freeing the yacht from the 'Shetland Trader' and securing it to a pontoon. The ship on its way also struck a motorboat. No one was aboard either boat at the time of the incident. The crew was then able to restore power aboard the 'Shetland Trader', raised anchor, and the vessel was escorted to the commercial pier in Cowes. It finally berthed at the Medina Wharf at 8 p.m. The HM Coastguard was made aware of the incident. There were no casualties on board. The responsibility remained with the harbour authority to ensure the safety and management of the vessel within their jurisdiction. The Marine Accident Investigation Branch was making initial enquiries.
