Sheng-Ping-Hai

On March 27, 2025, a crew member of the 'Sheng Ping Hai' was injured and needed a medical evacuation on the Hudson River. Just before 7 p.m. the Coast Guard’s New York Command Center received a distress call from the vessel which was southwards on the river near Catskill. A 23-year-old male crew member, the fourth assistant engineer from China, had sustained a spinal injury while working. The ship had just departed Albany and was en route to Barranquilla. After consulting with an on-call flight surgeon, the Coast Guard determined a medical evacuation was necessary and called on the Sheriff’s Office for help. Deputies quickly mobilized, coordinating with the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter 'Wire' from Saugerties and members of Diaz Memorial Ambulance Service. The Sheriff’s patrol vessel 'M27' pulled alongside the moving bulk carrier just south of the Saugerties Lighthouse. As the ship maintained its course downriver, responders successfully transferred the injured sailor using a rescue basket, carefully lowering him onto the Sheriff’s vessel. The victim was then brought ashore to the Coast Guard’s Saugerties station, where he was placed into a waiting ambulance and transported to Health Alliance Hospital in Kingston. His injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening. The US Coast Guard was investigating the circumstances that led to the injury.
