Two injured crew members hoisted off El Hierro
On March 28, 2026, the 'Sheng Chen Hai', enroute from Yangzhou to Vila do Condo resquested the medevac of two injured crew members while sailing 370 nautical miles off the coast of El Hierro. Air traffic controllers instructed the ship to head towards the island and contact the International Radiomedical Center to share evacuation guidelines. Meanwhile, the SAR helicopter Helimer 201 was contacted and confirmed the need for support from the Sasemar 103 aircraft. Both aircraft were mobilised and informed that the rendezvous point with the ship for the evacuation would be 150 nautical miles off El Hierro. Both injured crew members were stable, but unable to walk, and required an additional stretcher for the evacuation. The Sasemar 103, which acted as a communications link, took off for the rendezvous point. The Helimer 201 took off for El Hierro, refueled, and then departed for the rendezvous point. At 5:28 p.m., the aircraft reported that both injured crew members were aboard the helicopter. The Helimer 201 landed on El Hierro at 6:40 p.m., where an ambulance transported both evacuees to the hospital. The Sasemar 103 confirmed its arrival at base at 7:20 p.m. The mission was coordinated by the CCS of Salvamento MarÃtimo in Tenerife. The bulk carrier continued on its way with an ETA as of April 6.
