Doulbe Prosperity will dock at Malalag

Jun 17, 2011 10:57

The "Double Prosperity" which was pulled off the Bacud Reef after 39 days, will dock at Malalag Port in Davao del Sur instead of Bunawan wharf in Davao City, as requested by the Sarangani Provincial Government. Malalag is nearer to Sarangani. The PCG recommended for the ship to dock at the Davao port instead of Malalag due to security reasons. The "Double Prosperity" was pulled out from the Bacud reef around 4:49 a.m. on June 15. Lawyers of the Sarangani Provincial Government requested authorities to hold the ship until its owners settle with its obligations with the province for the damages the ship caused on the reef. The owners Yano Kaiun Co. Ltd. promised to compensate the Provincial Government with US $800,000. The extent of damage to the reef will have to be determined first by marine experts before it can be estimated how much the ship owner must pay. The Special Board of Marine Inquiry recently conducted its probe on the incident. The inquiry was, however, suspended until the extent of damage and its costs have been determined by experts. The captain already had admitted before the SBMI panel that the accident was due to human error. It was learned that the ship's crew were looking for a cellular phone signal, forcing them to alter the ship's course that led to the tanker ramming into the reef.
