The last preparatory meeting took place in Livorno in the morning of May 28, coordinated by the Capitancy, with the participation of all the bodies and actors involved. Cruise ships alter routes to avoid migrant crisis in Greece

Sep 16, 2015 08:52

The migrant crisis in Europe is affecting some cruise line itineraries. Luxury lines Regent Seven Seas Cruises and sister company Oceania Cruises are steering clear of Lesbos, the Greek island where more than 20,000 migrants are temporarily housed in camps while awaiting transport to other countries. Hundreds more continue to arrive. Both lines will avoid Lesbos in favor of Kavala, Greece, on all itineraries this fall. Regent's Mariner and Voyager were scheduled to call at Lesbos on autumn routes, as was Oceania's Nautica. A company spokesman says the lines are continuing to monitor the situation “and will make future itinerary adjustments should the need warrant.” “Due to the situation in Lesbos, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Oceania Cruises have altered itineraries that call on Mytilene. Seven Seas Mariner’s scheduled call on Sept. 17 will be replaced with a day at sea and Sept. 29 with a stop in Kavala, Greece. Kavala will also replace Seven Seas Voyager’s scheduled call to Mytilene on Oct. 29 and Oceania Cruises’ ship Nautica’s scheduled call on Oct. 6,” the spokesman explains. Silversea Cruises' Silver Spirit, according to a report in The New York Times, also will skip Lesbos later this month and instead call at Myrina, Greece. http://www.examiner.com/article/cruise-ships-alter-routes-to-avoid-migrant-crisis-greece
