Fire on vehicles carrier off Jeju
On Feb 6, 2026, at around 5:34 p.m., a fire broke out in a vehicle aboard the 'Seaworld Marine 2', which was sailing about 17 kilometers north of Jeju Port, enroute from Jeju to Mokpo. with 28 crew members on board. Shortly after the vessel departed from Jeju at approximately 5:30 p.m. LT, the fire was detected in one of the trucks. The fire alarms were activated, prompting the crew to initiatethe onboard fire suppression systems immediately. The captain ordered an emergency turnaround and returned toward Jeju. The Jeju Coast Guard dispatched patrol vessels and a helicopter and a special unit to the scene. Upon the vessel’s arrival at Jeju Port, firefighting teams boarded the ship and continued the fire fighting efforts. The blaze was fully extinguished approximately one hour after the vessel had berthed. Two crew members and two truck drivers were taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation for further treatment. Initial investigation indicates that the fire originated in a refrigerated truck aboard the vessel. Three vehicles, including a 5-ton cargo truck, were destroyed in the fire. The ship was carrying a total of 127 vehicles, among them 86 cargo trucks and 41 private cars. The 'Seaworld Marine 2' arrived in Mokpo on Feb 7 and remained stationary in port until Feb 13, when it sailed again, headed to Jeju.
