Bulk carrier crew rescued distressed single hand sailor

Sep 05, 2022 12:20

The 'Seapearl', en route from bunbury to Singapore, rescued a single hand sailor off the Western Australian coast on Sep 3, 2022, after the Australian Maritime Safety Authority diverted the bulk carrier. The man, an Austrian national, was found around 110 kilometres west of Kalbarri. He had been sailing from Indonesia to Fremantle aboard an 11-metre catamaran when his vessel capsized. The AMSA co-ordinated the SAR operation after the man used multiple distress alerting methods to indicate he required assistance. Its response centre deployed the Perth-based rescue helicopter Challenger and diverted bulk carrier to conduct a search. The man was found and rescued from the tender of his catamaran in very challenging weather conditions.
