Bottom touch in Kiel Canal

Apr 10, 2017 09:32

On Apr 9, 2017, at 6.30 p.m. the "Lady Mathilde" suffered a bottom touch following an engine failure, caused by a cool water system damage, during the westbound transit of the Kiel Canal enroute from Virtsu to Amsterdam between Groß-Nordsee and the ferry pt. Landwehr. The ship suddenly veered to starboard and timewise listed five degrees to port when sliding over the bottom, before turning to the south shore. The following cargo m/v "Margaretha" (IMO: 9240548), turned away to the same side to avoid a collision. The "Lady Mathilde" berthed in the communal port in Rendsburg at 9.30 p.m. for surveys. She left Rendsburg again on Apr 11 at 10.30 p.m. after repairs and headed to Amsterdam, ETA Apr 13.
