Cruise ship got stuck in ice
The 'Scenic Eclipse II'Â was successfully freed by the U.S.Coast Guard after it became immobilized in dense pack ice near Antarctica on Jan 16, 2026. The cruise ship had got trapped approximately eight nautical miles from McMurdo Sound and made a distress call at around 11:00 p.m. LT to the U.S Coast Guard. The Coast Guard Cutter 'Polar Star (WAGB 10)', which was operating in the region, responded to the distress call and conducted icebreaking operations. The 'Polar Star' carried out two close icebreaking passes, successfully freed the vessel and escorted it approximately four nautical miles to open water.
