Ferry suffered engine damage
An initial inspection after the 'Kaleetan' was removed from service on Dec 5, 2025, has confirmed significant engine damage to one of the engine cylinders. The damage occurred when one of the cylinder's four valves failed during operation. The vessel will remain unavailable for service during this week and possibly the following two. Operations, Planning and Customer Service personnel were looking at options for restoring a four-vessel service to the San Juans before the weekend, and currently the Anacortes/San Jan Island route was operating on three vessels.
Dock damaged in hard landing
The WSF 'Kaleetan' had a hard landing at Colman Dock which took the vessel and a slip at the Seattle ferry terminal out of service on April 4, 2022, at about 7:30 a.m. The ship was sailing from Bainbridge Island to Seattle when hte accident occured. Damage was caused to one of the wing walls, which are designed to guide vessels in to the terminal. No one was hurt. It was not clear if the weather contributed to the incident. As a standard practice after such an incident, crew members were screened for intoxicants. Shortly before 1 p.m., WSF said that the Kaleetan would return to service but said that analysis on the dock was ongoing. There were 8 or 10 broken pieces of wood that had be replaced. Both the Bremerton and Bainbridge ferry routes continued to operate by alternating use of the other slip at Colman Dock. Ferry suffered steering issue
The Seattle-Bremerton route was reduced one-boat service for several hours in the morning of May 8, 2019, after the "Kaleetan" hhad to be taken out of service due to a steering problem. Crew members discovered the issue as the "Kaleetan" left Bremerton for its 7:20 a.m. sailing to Seattle. Washington State Ferries cancelled the 10 a.m. sailing from Seattle and the 11:10 a.m. sailing from Bremerton. The ferry headed to Seattle and underwent repairs at the Colman Dock. She was back in service with the 12:20 p.m. sailing from Seattle.
Ferry sidelined due to engine trouble
The "Kaleetan" had to be been taken out of service because of an engine problem while running on the Bremerton-Seattle route on MArch 15, 2019. She has been sidleined at the Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility on Bainbridge Island since. Without an available relief vessel, Washington State Ferries pulled the smaller "Sealth" from the Southworth-Vashon-Fauntleroy route. The "Sealth", which carries 54 fewer vehicles than the "Kaleetan", continued running the Bremerton route on Jan 18 with the "Kaleetan" still sidelined for repairs. The changes could remain in place until March 23. The "Kaleetan" had been scheduled to go out of service for some work in about a week but the problems found on March 15 forced the agency to pull it sooner. Earlier this month, WSF had to pull the "Wenatchee" and put it into an emergency dry dock period after a crab pot line did damage to the vessel, causing similar service reductions. The "Wenatchee" has since returned to service on the Bainbridge-Seattle route. With several vessels out for repairs and annual Coast Guard inspections, WSF has been left short of vessels to put into service. WSF typically schedules annual work on vessels during winter months when traffic is slower.
