Passenger died 24 hours after medevac
An 74 year old American passenger of the "World Voyager," who had suffered a very serious cardiac event, died one day after being medevaced. The medical emergency had promped an SAR operation launched from Ushuaia by the Argentine Navy on the morning of March 20, 2026. The ship was sailing in the northern sector of the Drake Passage, attempting to close the distance to Ushuaia, and it was determined that its maximum possible speed was insufficient for timely medical attention to the patient ashore. The ARA βStorni,β under the command of Commander GastΓ³n Fraire, which was in the port of Ushuaia performing its duties as an SAR watch vessel, received orders to depart at maximum speed, carrying personnel and medical equipment from the Ushuaia Naval Hospital. In the afternoon, with the ships already in the Drake Passage at a distance of 20 nautical miles, the 'Storni' deployed its two rigid-hulled inflatable boats (RHIBs) with the medical team. The medical evaluation recommended an immediate evacuation to the 'Storni' using the RHIBs and transfer to Ushuaia as quickly as possible. Simultaneously, the MRCC in Ushuaia coordinated with authorities of the Government of the Province of Tierra del Fuego the pre-positioning of the Bell 427 helicopter at the Harberton Ranch, on the Beagle Channel. Due to the medical evaluation and operational limitations of the aircraft for nighttime operations, the evacuation continued aboard the Navy ship. Without altering its course, the ship deployed its RIHBs towards Harberton to embark medical personnel and equipment from the Provincial Emergency Response Directorate, who had been transported to the location by air, to join the medical staff of the Naval Hospital. Both teams worked in coordination on board to stabilise the patient. After 10:00 p.m., the Navy vessel reached port, and the patient was immediately transferred by ambulance to the San Jorge Clinic for prompt care and treatment. The man, however, died 24 hours after the evacuation. Allision in Ushuiaia
On Jan 5, 2026, the 'World Voyager' broke lose from its berth in the port of Ushuaia amid winds of about 30 knots and gusting to 40 knots, and went adrift along with the gangway still hanging from its starboard side. The ship first struck the port structure and then was pushed with its starboard side bow against the port side stern of the cruise ship 'Viking Octantis' (IMO: 9863194), which was moored nearby. The impact was well above the waterline, so no water ingress occurred. The 'Viking Octantis' suffered only minor damage to one of its rear railings, while the bow of the 'World Voyager' suffered a crack, with no structural damage reported. There were no injuries either. The 'World Voyager' dropped anchor in pos. 54Β° 48' S 068Β° 16 W after the allision, before heading to Yankee HRB with an ETA as of Jan 8. The 'Viking Octantis' left the port on Jan 6 en route to Fournier Bay with an ETA as of Jan 8. The Argentine Naval Prefecture indicated that an official report was expected to determine precisely how the incident occurred. The incident was caused by a rope breaking at the stern of the 'World Voyager', which was not a port mooring line, but a line belonging to the vessel. The accident happened while the province was being inspected by the National Ports and Navigation Agency (ANPYN) following a complaint about the poor condition of the Ushuaia port infrastructure. The national port authority conducted an on-site inspection that revealed a series of structural flaws, including in the port fenders.
