Stena Line acquires Wasaline and will operate route between Umeå and Vaasa

Nov 04, 2025 09:46

While the Stena Line is expanding its network in the Baltic Sea with the acquisition of Wasaline and the operation of the route between Umeå and Vaasa as its fifth route in the region, the 'Aurora Botnia' will remain owned by Kvarken Link, and the employees will continue as before. The Wasaline is currently owned by the cities of Umeå and Vaasa through the company Kvarken Link. The Stena Line will take over the shipping company NLC Ferry AB Oy/Wasaline. In 2025 the route was designated as the world's first international green shipping corridor through agreements with Gasum and Stena Line. With the acquisition, Stena Line will gain access to new environmental technology and green fuels, while Wasaline expects the new owner to be able to further enhance the route. The acquisition is now awaiting approval from the two city councils and regulatory processing and is expected to be completed in early 2026. With the new route, Stena Line will operate a total of 21 ferry routes.

Medevac in Vaasa

Jul 22, 2022 10:43

The 'Aurora Botnia' returned to Vaasa from south of Replot on July 21, 2022, after a person fell ill on board. It was concluded that the patient would get to the hospital faster if the ferry turned around instead of a helicopter medevac. When the ferry was back to Vaasa, an ambulance was waiting to get the patient to treatment as quickly as possible. Both the voyage to Umeå and the night's departure to Vaasa were delayed about an hour due to the incident.
